Job Check Under New Immigration Rules.

The objective of the new Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) process is to encourage businesses to try to hire New Zealanders first. Therefore, you need to establish through a Job check process, that no New Zealanders are available for the Job.

To apply for a job check you first need be an accredited employer under AEWV (If you need information about Employer accreditation process and requirements, please visit our Employer Accreditation Page.

Once the check is approved, you can offer the job to a skilled migrant. Please note that if the job pays 200% of the median wage (currently $55.52 hourly) or if the job is on the green list of occupations, advertising for the job is not mandatory.

Process and Requirements for Job Check Application.

What is my first step?

The first step of the job check process is to advertise the role in accordance with the Immigration New Zealand’s (INZ) guidelines. Your ad contents must satisfy Immigration New Zealand’s requirements!

What must be included in the job advertisement?

To satisfy INZ requirements your ad must include:

  • The Job Title and description with details of the key tasks and responsibilities.
  • Key terms and conditions of the proposed employment i.e., minimum & maximum rate of pay; estimated actual earnings if the actual earnings are not guaranteed (Commission or bonuses are not considered to be part of earnings for salary threshold requirement ); hours, days and location of work.
  • Employment types (permanent, temporary, fixed or casual).
  • Minimum qualifications, work experience, skills or other specifications needed to do the job (Include only what is necessary to do the specific job on offer).
  • Numbers of vacancies if more than one vacancy. You can include multiple vacancies in one advertisement if the details are the same and later use the advertisement as part of one job
    check application, for all roles.

Where & how long to publish the advertisement?

  • The role must be advertised on a national job listing website such as SEEK, Trade Me Jobs etc, where most New Zealanders are likely to search for jobs.
  • The job needs to be advertised for at least 2 weeks before you apply for the job check.

What is my final stage?

Once the advertisement is published, you will need to keep records of the number of job applications you received  and keep a copy of the job advertisement as evidence. When submitting the INZ application, you need to provide the advertisement evidence, a job description and a proposed employment agreement.

Any other special documents?

If you are hiring a family member or your relative, you need to provide reasons for that. You also need to provide reasons why no NZ candidates were hired if you receive applications from NZ candidates.
